Guide Review - Boom Boom Rocket
Boom Boom Rocket is the latest game from Bizarre Creations (the folks that created Geometry Wars) and is published by EA. It is a music/rhythm game that has you detonating fireworks in time to music in order to earn points. It is a simple concept that is actually quite fun, but there might not be enough meat to the game overall to make it worth a purchase for anyone but the most die hard fans of rhythm games. For 800 MS points you get ten songs that are remixed versions of classical pieces of music, and you get a handful of modes. You can play a standard mode where your goal is just to complete each song on the easy, medium, or hard difficulty levels. There is also an endurance mode that loops the same song over and over but the speed increases each time you start another "lap". You can also play the game with a second player, but it doesn't really add much to the experience.
The actual gameplay in boom Boom Rocket goes something like this. Very similar to Dance Dance Revolution, there are icons that scroll up the screen, and when they reach a certain point you have to press the correct button. In this case, you are detonating fireworks as they rise up in the sky. BBR throws a bit of a curveball at you by having the fireworks rise at different speeds and come in at different angles, so you have to watch the whole screen and keep track of everything rather than just watch one spot like most rhythm games.
A major selling point of BBR is the visuals, and they are pretty impressive. It is nothing more than fireworks exploding over the waterfront of a city, but it is still pretty to look at. The sound is also quite good, and I dig the soundtrack. I just wish there were more songs to play.
Overall, Boom Boom Rocket is a fun game, but it is hard to justify the price. Try the demo before you decide to buy.
