It is the end of an era. Season 5 of Red vs. Blue marks the end of the Blood Gulch Chronicles storyline. It was a great ride while it lasted, and while we are sad to see it go, we know that Rooster Teeth has something equally great up their sleeves so we aren’t too bummed out. As far as the Season 5 DVD goes, it is packed with special features and the season itself is quite good. Halo fans. Xbox fans. You not only need Season 5 but the whole Red vs. Blue series.

Story

Red vs. Blue Season 5 covers episodes 78-100 and is the end of the Blood Gulch Chronicles storyline. At the end of Season 4, the teams had returned to Blood Gulch (Coagulation in Halo 2), but Tucker was pregnant with an alien baby, a giant spaceship had fallen on Donut, and Tex had run off to track down a rival freelancer. I don’t want to give away too much, so I’ll just say that the story brings back some older characters, introduces some new ones, and revisits some favorite jokes and gags so that everything comes full circle. Everything is wrapped up fairly well, and while some things are still left unanswered, it is a fairly satisfying conclusion to a great series. Similar to Season 3, there is a lot of story development and long periods between the really funny stuff, but it is still very good.

Special Features

The Season 5 DVD includes the full 122 minute season along with a ton of special features. There is, of course, a full commentary for the season that is packed with tons of information and jokes and insider insight that will really make you appreciate the series even more. There are also PSAs covering zombie plans, movie theater etiquette, outdated gadgets, and even one that was made using the Halo 3 beta. You’ll also find outtakes and deleted scenes as well. The side story series starring Tex that was available on Xbox Live, “Out of Mind”, is also included. Perhaps the best special feature is the six alternate endings for the series. They cover a lot of different scenarios and will make fans very happy. Overall, the special features for Season 5 are among the best the series has to offer and rounds out a really great disc.

Bottom Line

Overall, Red vs. Blue Season 5 is a great DVD that is highly recommended for fans of the show. The season itself is really well done and does a good job of wrapping up the series. It isn’t quite as rapid fire funny as 1,2,and 4, but it also isn’t as slow and long as season 3, so it is a good balance overall. There are still a lot of good jokes here, such as Vic’s jingle, everything the new character Sister says, and the return of dead Blue Captain Butch Flowers among many others. Season 5 also has the best battle scenes out of the entire series, and seeing the familiar Halo 2 deathmatch so nicely choreographed is pretty cool. Red vs. Blue Season 5 is highly recommended and is a great end to a great show.
