NASCAR 08 was completely terrible. Let's just get that out of the way first. It was an awful start for the series on next-gen systems. Which is why it comes as a bit of a surprise that NASCAR 09 is a 1000% improvement on 08. To get from that hunk of junk to this streamlined beauty in less than a year is pretty darn impressive. It looks great, drives very well, and packs plenty of features and modes to keep you busy for a while. NASCAR 09 is well worth checking out.
Quick Hits

  • Title: NASCAR 09
  • Platform: Xbox 360
  • Publisher: EA
  • Developer: Tiburon
  • ESRB Rating: “E” for Everyone
  • Genre: Racing
  • Pros: Nice graphics; solid gameplay; plenty of modes
  • Cons: A.I. needs work; missing features from previous games

NASCAR 09 packs all of the officially licensed NASCAR stuff you’d expect such as all of the drivers as well as all of the real world tracks for the Craftsman Truck, Nationwide Series, and Sprint Cup Series. Most of the sponsors are present except for the alcohol companies, of course. One of the new features this year is a paint booth mode that lets you customize your car in-game, but you can also create car skins on your computer and download them to your Xbox 360. This is a semi-complicated process, however, so don’t expect it to be fast and easy. Check out this page for help.

Gameplay modes include season modes for the three NASCAR series as well as the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup career mode where you start out as a newcomer and have to sign team and sponsor contracts and work your way up the ranks. There is also a challenge mode which gives you objectives you have to meet out on the track. Online play is available for up to 13 players and it works well. Unfortunately, there is no splitscreen multiplayer.

Gameplay

EA
The gameplay is completely fixed from the unplayable mess of last year. When you start the game, you are given a choice between Normal and Pro modes. Pro mode is more of a simulation mode that has more realistic physics and handling. Normal mode is far more arcadey and allows you to beat and bang your way through the pack. Both control modes drive very, very well and offer different fun and challenges for gamers of all skill levels. You still damage your car in Normal mode, and you can still spin out if you don’t drive the way you should, but it is very forgiving and a heck of a lot of fun. You can also adjust race length, pit stops, flags, and a bunch of other stuff to make the game play just the way you want.

What strikes me most about the gameplay in NASCAR 09 is just how comfortable you feel racing in the pack. In previous NASCAR games, racing two or three wide and actually holding your line was pretty darn difficult. Not so here. The controls are very precise and smooth, and the hit detection between the cars is spot on.

I do have a couple of complaints. First, where are the total team controls and intimidator features from previous games? They made a pretty big impact and greatly changed how the game played and are missed here. Secondly, the AI needs a massive overhaul. They rarely crash on their own, and more often than not races end with cars in two lines just like they started.

I would go as far as to give each and every driver a custom personality so that they drive like they do in real life. I want Tony Stewart to get pissed off at me and run me off the road. I want Kyle Petty to completely suck and finish in the back of every race. I want Kyle Busch to do whatever it takes to win. EA makes football and basketball players play just like they do in real life. So I want my NASCAR drivers to behave like they do in real life rather than driving around side by side like robots.

Graphics

The graphics in NASCAR 09 are very nice. The cars are a bit too shiny and plastic looking, but the damage model is pretty good. Everything is very sharp and clear and good looking out on the track. The real star here is the lighting. The cars reflect the lighting and shadows realistically. And my favorite touch is that there are great looking day/night cycles in races like the Coca Cola 600 or the July Daytona race that start in the late afternoon and finish after dark.

Sound

The sound is good, but a bit subdued. The sounds out on the track are nice and loud and realistic, but your spotter and crew chief are quiet and calm and sound rather bored. Jeff Gordon did a ton of voice work for the game, as he is your official tour guide for all of the modes and through career, and he did a good job for the most part.

Bottom Line

EA
All in all, NASCAR 09 is a complete turn around for the series. It really looked bad for NASCAR videogames after the mess that was NASCAR 08, but EA Tiburon righted the ship in less than a year and produced a great game that race fans can be proud of. It looks nice, packs plenty of modes, and offers two distinct gameplay styles to ensure everyone has a good time. Whether you want a realistic simulation of real NASCAR racing, of if you want to beat and bang through the field, NASCAR 09 is just plain fun. Or, if you’re like me and want to wreck Tony Stewart and Dale Jr. every time you see them, this game accommodates that style as well. Check out the demo on the Xbox Live Marketplace, but for NASCAR fans and race fans in general, NASCAR 09 is a worthy purchase.
