LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga Review (X360)

About.com Rating fourhalf out of Five

By Eric Qualls, About.com

LucasArts
LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga follows a simple formula: Take two great games and mash them together to create the ultimate LEGO Star Wars experience. From a sheer value standpoint, it is an absolute success because you get all six movies, new areas and characters and secrets, online co-op, and more for just $50. The only downside is that you have likely already played through most of it before, but to have improved versions of it all on one disc, makes it worth picking up all over again.
Quick Hits

  • Title: LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga
  • Platform:Xbox 360
  • Publisher: LucasArts
  • Developer: Traveller's Tales
  • ESRB Rating: "E" for Everyone
  • Genre: Action/Adventure
  • Pros: All six Star Wars movies in one game; tons of secrets and unlockables; lots of stuff to do; very fun; co-op
  • Cons: You have likely seen most of this before; prequel levels aren't as good as classic trilogy levels

Features

LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga features all of the levels from the two previous LEGO Star Wars games, spanning all six movies. The prequel levels have been tweaked a bit to play nice with the new innovations introduced in LSWII such as vehicle switching. And there are some new levels here and there, such as the speeder chase at the start of Episode II. On top of all of that, there are tons of secrets in each level to find, more than 120 characters to unlock, and an upgraded character customizer that lets you combine parts to build any goofy characters you could ever want.

All in all, it is a pretty solid value even if you have already played the first two games. There is enough new stuff here to warrant playing through it all again. And it will take a long, long time to actually beat this game 100%, like 30-40 hours + to get everything, so it is well worth the $50 asking price. Plus, online co-op has been added, which sweetens the deal even more.

Gameplay

LucasArts
The gameplay is exactly like you remember it from previous games. For the uninitiated, the gist is that playing through the story version of levels limits you to only the characters that were actually in those scenes in the movies. But when you beat the story version, you unlock free play, which lets you switch between several characters at will. Depending on whether you are a droid or a bounty hunter or a Jedi or a blaster character, you have unique abilities that allow you to unlock new secrets or open up new sections of a level. Occasionally you will also get to play vehicle levels such as both of the Death Star attacks, the Episode I pod race, the Episode II speeder chase, and much more. There are several different hidden objects and secret areas in each level, and finding them all opens up new secrets out in the Mos Eisley Cantina hub that connects all of the levels.

My only real complaint is that even though they have been tweaked and adjusted to conform to LSWII's new features and overall higher quality, the original LEGO Star Wars levels based on the prequel trilogy just aren't as good as the LSWII classic trilogy levels. I never noticed the quality gap before, but being able to play the levels one right after another really exposes some design issues. The puzzles aren't as good and the level designs aren't quite up to the same standard either. They are still fun and perfectly playable, but not as good as the "classic" levels.

Graphics and Sound

Graphically, LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga is a bit more polished than LSWII, but it isn't pushing the Xbox 360 at all. It looks just fine, though, considering that these are little LEGO people running around, and there are some nice special effects and reflections to pump up the visual quality a little.

The sound is where the game really shines. All of the classic music from all of the movies and all of the exact same sound effects are present which really makes the game feel just like the movies.

Bottom Line

LucasArts
Overall, LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga is an incredibly fun game that gives you a lot of bang for your buck. You can now play through all six Star Wars movies, but there are also tons of new secrets and additions that will keep you busy for quite a while. If you played the two previously released LEGO Star Wars games, you have seem most of this before, but in The Complete Saga everything is more polished and more fun and just a bit better than before, which makes it all worth playing through again. Co-op play, whether locally on one screen or over Xbox Live, really ups the fun level because experiencing the fun and funny moments that these games are known for is even more fun with a friend by your side. This is a great game for both kids and adults, and Star Wars fans (obviously) will really get a kick out of it. LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga is a great game overall that is highly recommended.
