LEGO Indiana Jones is pretty much what we all expected. It feels an awful lot like LEGO Star Wars, but with whips instead of lightsabers and 100% more stubbly-faced LEGO Harrison Ford. It is great fun for kids and adults and is packed with plenty of trademark Indiana Jones moments to keep fans very happy. The LEGO formula is kind of starting to wear a bit thin, however, and it isn’t as fresh and cool as it used to be, but for this game at least, it is still very enjoyable.
Quick Hits

  • Title: LEGO Indiana Jones
  • Platform: Xbox 360
  • Publisher: LucasArts
  • Developer: Traveller’s Tales
  • ESRB Rating: “E” For Everyone
  • Genre: Action/Adventure
  • Pros: Fun gameplay; cool secrets; good puzzles
  • Cons: Very familiar if you played LEGO Star Wars; bringing a whip to a gun fight = frustration; no online play

LEGO Indiana Jones, with the subtitle “The Original Adventures”, follows Indy through the first three films of the franchise: Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, and The Last Crusade. Each movie is split into six levels for a total of 18 main levels along with three secret levels. Just like LSW, when you beat a level in story mode you can play through it again in Free Play. And, of course, all of the heroes and villains along with plenty of nameless generic soldiers are all playable in Free Play, which opens up new areas and can make some situations much easier. Also just like LSW, there are hidden artifacts (minikits) and cheats hidden in each level for you to find. There is a ton of content here, and to beat the game with 100% (but not 1000/1000 achievements) takes 20+ hours.

There is no online co-op this time around, which is a bummer, but local co-op is still available and it is just as fun as ever. The main hub of the game where you select missions and buy characters/cheats is Professor Jones’ school, Barnett College, which holds some interesting secrets of its own. And truly bonding the whole game together is the unique LEGO humor that puts a little twist on the familiar scenes.

Gameplay

LucasArts
The gameplay in LEGO Indiana Jones is at the same time familiar, but does enough new stuff to set itself apart from LSW. You still are basically running around and breaking everything you see, fighting enemies, and collecting a mountain of LEGO studs, but there are also some gameplay tweaks to go along with it. Indy has his whip, of course, which allows him to swing across gaps, disarm enemies, and pull switches. Female characters can jump higher than the men, and Willie has a high-pitched scream that breaks objects and can kill enemies. Academic characters, such as Indy’s dad, can decipher hieroglyphic puzzles and open secret areas. Thuggee characters (the bad guys from Temple of Doom), can use special statues to open new areas. And enemy soldiers can open up restricted areas. My only real complaint with the core gameplay is that the enemies have guns and you usually only have a whip and your fists. It worked out okay in the movies, but in this videogame you die a heck of a lot. You can pick up weapons that enemies drop, but 90% of the time you won’t have a gun. Dying isn’t a big deal since you just respawn in the same spot, but it can be very annoying to say the least.

Where the game really stands out is in the puzzles. They usually have multiple parts and require you to switch characters and do several steps to solve them. They also usually aren’t as obvious as in LSW, so you actually have to think a little bit to figure them out. The boss fights usually have these type of puzzles associated with them as well.

The level design is hit or miss with some levels being exactly like the movies and others not really going how you remember. The highlight is definitely the Temple of the Grail level at the end of Last Crusade, which tests you just like in the movie.

Graphics and Sound

Gaphically, LEGO Indiana Jones is a nice looking game. Not up to normal Xbox 360 standards, mind you, but for a game about little plastic people fighting each other, it is impressive.

The sound is also very good. The music is taken right from the movies and really adds to the overall experience.

Bottom Line

LucasArts
All in all, LEGO Indiana Jones is a solid game that is great fun for kids, adults, and all Indiana Jones fans in general. It offers a ton of stuff to do and some very cool secrets spread throughout the levels that make the whole experience very enjoyable. I will say that I think the level design and overall game is a little weaker than the LEGO Star Wars games simply because Indiana Jones doesn’t have quite the number of memorable characters and recognizable locations, so some of the characters and levels seem like a bit of a stretch. That said, though, it is still dripping with more than enough Indiana Jones nostalgia to keep everyone happy. And, in the end, LEGO Indiana Jones is a fun, funny, well put together game that I highly recommend.

On a side note, and since these won’t really be problems once the game is released these didn’t affect the score, I had a couple of other issues. I ran into a pretty serious glitch where the game would freeze when trying to play Free Play levels. Not all the time, but about 40% of the time or so. Reading message board posts from other people that got the game early, this is a common problem. Hopefully, it gets patched at release or soon after. Also, the achievement list is good, but some of the secret achievements are very obscure and are near impossible to figure out on your own. Again, after release once people stumble over them and post them on the Internet it won’t be a problem, but some of these secrets are kind of ridiculous.
