Nothing says “togetherness” like local multiplayer games. Instead of playing with strangers on Xbox Live, you can play games locally with friends and family. Personally, this is our preferred way to play. These are also a good way to try to get your non-gamer girlfriend/boyfriend involved since you can play together. You can buy a great new game for “Us” instead of just “you”, which is always a good idea.

One nice alternative to giving someone a normal Xbox 360 game is to give them an Xbox Live Arcade game. These are downloadable titles that are stored on your Xbox 360 hard drive. The only way to gift them currently, unfortunately, (you used to be able to buy them directly from Amazon, but not anymore) is to buy Microsoft Point cards at retailers for $20-50. A $20 (1600 MSP card) would be good for between 1-4 XBLA game downloads, depending on what games are chosen, and a $50 card (4000 MSP) would get anywhere from 3-10 XBLA games. Microsoft Points can also be used on more than just Xbox Live Arcade games (system themes, Avatar accessories, movie downloads, etc.) so they are always a good gift idea for an Xbox 360 gamer.

When you don’t know what else to get, peripherals are a solid gift idea because pretty much every gamer needs an extra controller or three. There are also controllers available for specific game types, so if you know your gaming loved ones like fighting games or music/rhythm games or racing games you can pick up the perfect accessory that will make those games even better.

Horror games seemingly only ever get any attention during the month of October, but most gamers we know like to be scared year round. These games aren't for kids, as they are all rated "M" for Mature due to language, blood/gore, and violence, but for older teens and adult gamers horror games are a solid genre to consider for a gift. Horror videogames offer a closer, deeper connection for the player than movies do (because you're actually THE character and not just watching), which makes them doubly scary but also doubly satisfying.
