Xbox is the best platform for shooters this generation thanks to amazing graphical power and a great controller. Both first and third-person shooters shine on Xbox and these are the best of the best.
Halo 2 isn't the huge step forward a lot of people had hoped for, but it is still one of the best games on Xbox. The Halo series controls and plays better than any other console FPS ever, so even if the single player story wasn't so satisfying you can't deny that the expierience was smooth and fun to play. The real attraction of Halo 2 is the excellent off and online multiplayer options. This is the game that all Xbox Live games and FPS are judged against from here on.
Doom 3 has made the jump from PC to Xbox and the results are absolutely stunning. It still looks absolutely gorgeous and is one of the scariest games to come out in a long time. It isn't the sharpest playing or most innovative FPS to come along, but the gorgeous graphics and disturbing visual and aural experience will keep you coming back.
Midway's Unreal Championship 2 is one of the few FPS that can stand side by side with Halo 2 as far as Xbox Live is concerned. There are so many options and features and game types in the game and the gameplay is amazingly fast and varied. It uses both first and third-person perspectives and puts an equal focus on melee and projectile combat to give you a much different deathmatch experience than you are probably used to. A great game.
You cant go wrong with giant robots. You simply cant. Giant robots with the freedom to roam around huge open areas and destroy anything and everything is even better. MechAssault 2 takes everything that made the first MechAssault good and improves upon it 10x. The game looks gorgeous and plays like a champ when you want to get your giant robot freak on. A nice selection of Xbox Live modes round out a stellar package.
The movie didnt do too hot, but the prequel game won critical acclaim. Riddick is an outstanding first person shooter that immerses you into the game world like no other. The graphics and presentation are some of the best on the Xbox. The only complaint is that it is a pretty short game, but the time you do get to spend with Riddick is amazing.
Half-Life 2 has made the transition from PC to Xbox mostly intact and the result is one of the best gaming experiences on the system. The game only features single player and includes none of the great multiplayer modes of the PC version, which is disappointing, but the single player campaign is among the very best youll ever play so it is still absolutely worth picking up.
Far Cry Instincts is a completely new game rather than a port of the PC version and it has been built from the ground up to take full advantage of the Xbox hardware. It looks gorgeous and plays like a dream and thanks to a lengthy single player campaign, level editor, and Xbox Live play it will keep you busy for a good long time. Xbox owners, you need to play this game.
TimeSplitters: Future Perfect is hands down the best TimeSplitters game yet. The controls have been tightened up, the graphics have been cleaned up and are less cartoony, and the single player game has been expanded and improved and is quite fun this time around. All of the great multiplayer modes you expect from this series return once again along with the mapmaker but now you can trade maps and play online via Xbox Live.
Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is a solid first-person-shooter that delivers a fun single player experience and some of the best Xbox Live play around. It isnt as big or as polished as the PC Battlefield games, but there is a lot to like here which makes Battlefield 2 worth owning for shooter fans. Multiple classes, huge maps, vehicles Battlefield 2 has is all covered and more.
Star Wars: Republic Commando is a surprising game in that it is set in the Star Wars universe but doesn't contain any Jedi, X-Wings, or TIE Fighters. You are instead a team of elite commandos doing the Republic's dirty work. Sounds crazy, but it works incredibly well. The gameplay is fast and smooth and the enemies are relentless, which makes for an exciting game where the action never stops. The multiplayer modes aren't as good as others on this list, but the single player holds up well.
