The Action genre. So wonderfully vague in its description that anything from straight hack and slash to open world sandbox games can fit under its umbrella. We list our picks for the 10 Best Action Games the Xbox 360 has to offer here.
Batman: Arkham Asylum was great. Batman: Arkham City is amazing. It just shows how well developer Rocksteady really "gets" Batman. It is a bigger, better, more open Batman game that really lets the Caped Crusader make full use of his gadgets and skills much more than the tight confines of Arkham Asylum. It features a solid story along with tons of extra missions to find hidden around the city, so it'll keep you busy for quite a while.
Red Dead Redemption is an Old West-themed sandbox game where you'll ask yourself multiple times while you play "I wonder if I can do this ...", referring to some specific clichéd "Western" action, and more often than not you can. It has been lovingly crafted to not only mimic Western films, but real life in the West as well. The result is a fresh, incredibly detailed take on open world games that is surprisingly realistic and satisfying and just plain fun. This is the best open world game to come around in a long time.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance takes the Metal Gear series in a fantastic fast-paced new direction, and thanks to great presentation, awesome music, and genuinely fun and satisfying gameplay it stands as one of the best action games on Xbox 360. It has boss fights, and crazy combos, and a talking robot dog, and a crazy politician at the center of it all that will leave your mouth agape at the awesomenewss at the same time you're shaking your head in disbelief at how nuts it is. Metal Gear Rising is highly recommended.
Sleeping Dogs takes the Grand Theft Auto formula to a new and exotic location - Hong Kong - and the result is a fresh and interesting new open world crime sim that is a breath of fresh air in a genre growing increasingly stagnant. A solid story with great characters and a focus on hand-to-hand combat rather than shooting make Sleeping Dogs really stand out from the pack.
Prince of Persia makes the jump to next-gen with a re-imagining of the franchise. There are no Sands of Time here, and instead there is a new Prince and a new world to explore all wrapped up in some of the most gorgeous and unique looking graphics we’ve seen in a long time. Every aspect of the game has been polished to a high shine, and Prince of Persia is truly one of the best action games on the Xbox 360.
Warner Bros. Interactive
Zombies. Cheerleaders. Chainsaws. Humor. Great soundtrack. Lollipop Chainsaw has it all. The gameplay us fun and satisfying and actually gets better as you play and unlock new moves, and the high score mentality of the game as a whole will keep you coming back for more. The presentation is also very nice with lots of little touches that will make zombie fans very happy. We loved it.
Afro Samurai is almost the perfect licensed game. It stays true to what made the source material great, which keeps fans of the license happy, but is good enough on its own that people who aren’t familiar with the anime will like it as well. And then those new fans go out and buy the Afro Samurai manga and DVD and the franchise enjoys even more success. We aren’t saying the game doesn’t have a few rough edges, but the presentation and story and bloody fun action and overall gameplay make it worth a look.
After GTAIV was a bit of a letdown, Rockstar needed to come back in a big way with Grand Theft Auto V, and they definitely succeeded. GTAV brings back all of the fun stuff to the series but also innovates with three distinct playable characters, a huge open world that is fun to explore, and tons of stuff to do. And you don't have to constantly answer calls from your cousin asking you to go bowling, so it is already miles better than GTAIV. Toss in great online play, and Gtand Theft Auto V is a must-play for any Xbox 360 action fan.
The latest reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise was right on the money and it stands as one of the best Xbox 360 games of 2013. With great graphics, a cool story, and fantastic gameplay with some breathtaking set-pieces, Tomb Raider 2013 is a blast from start to finish. Some will complain that there isn't much actual tomb raiding going on in this one, but it is an origin story to establish this new version of Lara Croft, so the raiding of tombs will come later. We can't wait! But in the meantime, Tomb Raider 2013 is absolutely worth playing.
Saint's Row: The Third is an open world sandbox game that basically throws out all of the rules. It doesn't have a super serious story. It doesn't have realistic physics. It just gives you a ton of vehicles and weapons and stupid stuff to do, and lets you play however you want. Saint's Row: The Third is one of the best pure goof off games of the generation.
