The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction does pretty much everything a superhero game needs to do to be successful. It gives you lots of powers to use and plenty of time and space to use them in. Ultimate Destruction is particularly interesting and fun because it lets you destroy anything and everything in sight, which is always, always, always fun. Hulk fans, comic book fans, and action game fans in general will all really get a kick out of this one.

Story

Ultimate Destruction follows the Incredible Hulk comic books rather than the disappointing movie of a couple of years ago. Familiar characters Doc Samson and the Abomination play vital roles in the storyline which is pretty good overall and fans of the Hulk should really enjoy it. When the game starts, Bruce Banner is already the Hulk and the story follows him as he tries to find a cure while at the same time fighting off the government and others that don’t appreciate him wrecking their city all of the time. The best part of all of this is that you get to play as the Hulk the entire time and there are no lame Bruce Banner missions like in the last game. Can I get a halleluiah!

Gameplay

Where Ultimate Destruction shines is in the gameplay. You are basically dumped into the middle of a city and can destroy anything you want. Sounds like fun to me. There are missions and objectives scattered around the levels (which consist of a church that is the Hulk’s home base, a vast desert, and a city), of course, but you can spend hours just running around smashing stuff. You can pick up cars and toss them around like pebbles. You can perform ground pounds and sonic hand claps that destroy everything within ten meters of you. You can also run right up the side of a building and jump around with the greatest of ease. The Hulk can also create his own weapons by tearing a car in half and putting the metal over his fists or tearing apart a rocket launcher and throwing the rockets at his enemies. As you play you earn points that you can use to buy new moves and there are dozens of different moves altogether. By the end of the game you’ll have a huge arsenal of destructive moves and it is a very satisfying experience overall.

Hulk Smash!

Ultimate Destruction satisfies the little kid inside of all of us by letting us blow stuff up. And I mean a lot of stuff. There is nothing more satisfying than picking up a streetlamp and using it like a baseball bat to knock a few cars into the ocean. You can even destroy some buildings if you do enough damage. Picking up a car or a bus and just throwing it around is pure simple fun. Slightly disturbing (although hilarious if you are anything like me) is that you can pick up people and throw them around too. I’m sorry, but throwing people at other people is hilarious to me. Something else that makes Ultimate Destruction work so well is that just moving around the city is a lot of fun. The Hulk can run fast, jump high, run up the side of a building, and then long jump off of the tallest skyscraper all with surprisingly little effort and everything flows together incredibly well. Smoothly going from Point A to Point B is a thrill and all of the destruction you are causing in your wake is just icing on the cake.
