The Ultimate Goof Off Game
Another area where Half-Life 2 succeeds is that it is fun to simply goof off. Taking advantage of the physics engine and all of the cool weapons at your disposal is a great way to make a huge mess in the game world and have a blast doing it. The gravity gun which lets you pick up an item and then blast it off at high speed is probably the greatest weapon in the history of first person shooters. Moving objects around to solve puzzles or to barricade doors is amazing fun. Even better is that you can pick up saw blades and use them as weapons to cut a few pesky zombies in two. In pretty much every situation you have two options go in shooting or use the environment to your advantage. Blowing up barrels or knocking a crate down onto enemies are just some of the things you can do besides direct combat and all of it is very cool.Graphics and Sound
Graphically, Half-Life 2 is one of the best looking games on the Xbox. It isnt as pretty as the PC version, of course, but every single aspect of the environment is startlingly realistic looking and the character models are some of the best youll find. The framerate isnt very stable, but it never got so bad as to interfere with the gameplay.
The sound is also extremely good in Half-Life 2. All of the voice actors did a great job of making all of the characters believable which really helps to sell the story as well as make you feel attached to the characters themselves. The sound effects are also absolutely incredible.
Overall, this is an absolutely amazing looking and sounding game.
Bottom Line
Compared to some of the other shooters on the Xbox the actual shooting and movement in Half-Life 2 isnt too impressive. Everything else you can do in the game world, however, is head and shoulders above anything else you have ever done before and that more than makes up for it. The awesome story is tied together by impressive visuals and sound and the post-apocalyptic world you explore is nothing short of awe inspiring. No other game of recent memory pulls you into the world and the storyline better than Half-Life 2. Playing Half-Life 2 is a epic event that you will savor for every single second you spend with the game. It really is that good. The Xbox version, unfortunately, doesnt have any multiplayer features which is rather disappointing but is far from a deal breaker. The single player campaign is decently long and is very satisfying to play though and is of a high enough overall quality to offset the lack of multiplayer. If you havent already played it on PC, Half-Life 2 for the Xbox is an outstanding experience that I highly recommend for a purchase.
