Bethesda Snags Star Trek License

By Eric Qualls, About.com

After months of speculation about the fate of the Star Trek license, Bethesda today announced that it has secured the rights to create Star Trek videogames for consoles, handhelds, and PC.

"Being able to work with the entire universe of this beloved series is an incredibly exciting opportunity for us," said Todd Vaughn, vice president of development for Bethesda Softworks. "We have some great ideas about where we want to go with this license and having the exclusive right to develop and publish Star Trek games across all platforms ensures that every Star Trek game will be a quality game worthy of its name."

The biggest news is that Bethesda also announced Star Trek: Legacy for Xbox 360 and PC. It is a real-time-strategy game that puts you into control of a fleet of warships in a huge variety of battle situations. There will also be a full multiplayer component as well. If anyone remembers the Starfleet Command games for PC, hopefully Legacy will be just as good and hopefully better. The best part is that the storyline will span across all of the Star Trek series (Original, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise) so all Trek fans should be very happy.

Legacy is currently scheduled for a September 2006 release on PC and Xbox 360.
