Microsoft E3 2009 Press Conference Recap

By , About.com Guide

Microsoft’s E3 2009 press conference was a doozy. We have all of the big news and announcements right here. The highlights – Forza 3 coming in October, Crackdown 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, Halo: Reach from Bungie, LastFM, Facebook, Twitter all coming to Xbox 360, Metal Gear Solid Rising, and a motion sensing camera codenamed “Natal”. We have full details on all of this and more right here.

Note - (X) will mark exclusive games.

Show starts with way too much Beatles Rock Band. (20 minutes worth …) 45 songs on-disc. DLC coming including full albums. “All You Need Is Love” will be DLC exclusive to Xbox 360. Game ships 9/9/09.

Tony Hawk Ride controller is insane. Very high tech. Game looks like it’ll be fun. Lots of difficulty levels to make it accessible. Coming this Fall.

Modern Warfare 2 scheduled for 11/10/09 release. Two new DLC map packs to be released on XBL first.

Final Fantasy XIII targeted for Spring 2010 release.

New Epic Games XBLA exclusive, Shadow Complex. Looks like Super Metroid / Castlevania SOTN-style exploration sidescroller. Coming this Summer. (X)

Joy Ride – XBLA kart racer with Avatars and custom content sharing. Will be free. (X)

Crackdown 2!!!! Trailer looks good. Made by Ruffian Games (former Realtime Worlds guys). (X)

Left 4 Dead 2 – 360 and PC exclusive. Coming November 17th, 2009. (X)

Splinter Cell: Conviction looks good. Levels will be “sandbox” so you choose how you want to tackle objectives in any way you want. Assassin’s Creed-style climbing/environmental movement. Coming this Fall. (X)

Forza Motorsport 3 coming in October. Big graphical improvement. Cockpit view. 60 FPS. 400 cars from 50 manufacturers. One button gameplay mode. Rewind feature. Crazy customization. Video editor. (X)

Halo 3 ODST looks insane. Happens “Weeks before the start of Halo 3” in New Mombasa. ODST troopers have unique weapons Spartans don’t. Silenced weapons, low light vision mode. Return of Halo 1-style pistol. You switch between different ODST troopers via flashbacks to flesh out the story. Releases September 27th, 2009. (X)

Halo: Reach from Bungie. Coming 2010. When you buy Halo 3 ODST you get a Halo Reach Multiplayer Beta invite. (X)

Alan Wake looks gorgeous. Story presented in episodes sort of like “Lost”. Looks like open world survival horror. Light plays a huge part in the gameplay. Scheduled for Spring 2010. (X)

Last.FM coming to Xbox Live. Available to XBL Gold Members for free this Fall.

Netflix Queue management will be accessible through Xbox 360 (finally).

Video Marketplace will re-launch as Zune Marketplace. Videos will be in full 1080p HD. Movies and TV shows will stream instantly instead of making you download.

Facebook coming to Xbox 360. Can easily link Facebook and Xbox Live friends. Share photos. Facebook Connect will allow you to take screenshots and instantly post them. Twitter also coming to Xbox 360. Facebook and Twitter will be available this Fall.

Hideo Kojima! Metal Gear Solid game coming to Xbox 360. Metal Gear Solid: Rising. Play as Raiden. Exclusivity wasn't clear.

Natal (codename) - Motion-sensing camera. Can scan in real world items to use in-game. Showed off racing, fighting, soccer, skateboarding games. Full 3D hand/foot/body gameplay. No preset animations – the games react to what you are really doing. Voice activated video chat. Voice recognition. Can use Xbox 360 dashboard with motion and voice commands. Has facial recognition and will sign you into your Gamertag automatically. Stephen Spielberg loves it (so it must be good …).

Peter Molyneux demo "Milo". Milo is an interactive character you can speak and do stuff with as well as interact with Milo’s world. Sort of like Seaman x1000. Can draw a picture, scan it in, and Milo will recognize what it is, what colors, etc.

And that is it. Great show from Microsoft.
