I know it seems weird to see "Top Picks" or "Best" referring to videogame movies, but bear with me. Videogame movies aren’t going to be winning any Oscars any time soon, but they are still pretty fun to watch. Grab some popcorn and a few friends and waste away an evening or two with these DVDs. Just make sure to check your expectations at the door.
1. Resident Evil
A nice mix of familiar stuff from the games with new characters and story make Resident Evil pretty enjoyable. Plus, you can’t go wrong with zombies.
2. Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Apocalypse continues the story of the first RE movie and introduces some characters that come straight out of the videogames. It is a better zombie movie than the first RE but isn’t as good overall. Still fun to watch.3. Mortal Kombat
The best parts about the Mortal Kombat series are the great characters and overall storyline and MK the movie does a good job of showcasing both. The chop socky fight scenes aren’t too spectacular, but they get the job done.4. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
Spirits Within is sort of a love it or hate it videogame movie. Some say it is too boring and preachy and the characters are as shallow as a puddle but a lot of people love it. The CGI animation is gorgeous looking and spotting all of the series references is fun.5. Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider is basically an Indiana Jones movie with a female lead. Angelina Jolie plays the role of Lara Croft absolutely perfectly.6. Tron
The videogame movie that started it all. Tron has a unique and instantly recognizable visual style and is a great showcase of just how far we have come with our technology over the last 20+ years. A true classic.7. Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros is a hideously bad movie, but it is so cheesy and so bad that it is still pretty fun to watch. Pinheaded Goombas, Dennis Hopper as King Koopa, and huge amounts of thick, irresistable cheese.8. Doom
They completely ruined the storyline and missed the boat when it comes to everything that makes the Doom games scary, but it has The Rock in it so it is worth watching. If you ignore the horrible first person shooter sequence and fight scene at the end, Doom is almost decent.
