Ubisoft was a bit ambitious with Far Cry 2. It is one of the most immersive and realistic shooters ever, but it wasn't especially fun. With Far Cry 3, the pendulum swings the other way - some may say too much - in that most of what FC2 did to immerse you has been reversed. Your weapons don't degrade, you have objective markers and radar and a decent map, and you aren't constantly suffering from freaking malaria. Other aspects, however, like hunting and surviving and the wilderness, fire, and a fairly realistic damage model do remain in Far Cry 3, however. The result is a less realistic, less immersive, but definitely more balanced and enjoyable game overall. Far Cry 2 was "this" close (imagine my fingers being super close together) to being a great game. Far Cry 3, with tweaks towards playability and fun, actually "is" a great game.
