Fallout 3 DLC #3 "Broken Steel" Mini-Review

By , About.com GuideMay 8, 2009

Follow me on:

The third Fallout 3 DLC released this week, and this is the big daddy. This is the one we've all been waiting for. For 800 MS points ($10), the Broken Steel DLC adds new perks, new enemies, new weapons and armor, new missions, and raises the level cap from 20 to 30. If you only buy one Fallout 3 DLC, this should be the one. The Broken Steel quests add 4-6 hours of new stuff, but raising your character to level 30 as well as doing some new side quests adds a lot more time. It is absolutely worth the price and I highly recommend it.

I do have some specific comments on some things, though. If you reached level 20 with a character before Broken Steel and kept doing quests (and not earning XP), I think it is going to be very hard to reach level 30. Levels 20-30 are pretty darn far apart, and if you don't have quests left over to do, reaching 30 is going to take a lot of work (collecting scrap metal, books, etc. that you can turn in to certain characters for caps/XP, for example). It is much easier to just start a new game because you'll actually get XP for everything this time around instead of reaching level 20 halfway through and not earning anything. Plus, you can go through Operation Anchorage again and get some of the best armor in the game, and then go through The Pitt again and get some of the best weapons in the game, and the addition of these new toys early on make the rest of your travels in the Capital Wasteland rather different than they were the first time (or three).

Some specifics on the new Broken Steel stuff. The level cap is raised immediately (a pop up message will tell you the cap has been raised to 30) and the new items and enemies and stuff will all appear in the world. The Broken Steel missions do not start until you finish the "Take It Back" mission. Before, the end of this mission meant your character died and it was the end of the game. Now you have some new options when you reach the purifier and you don't have to sacrifice yourself. You'll wake up two weeks later with fresh water pouring from the purifier, the Enclave in retreat, and a different sort of upbeat feel to all of the wasteland's inhabitants. It is still a dry, dead, terrible place, but there is a sense of optimism and hope that wasn't there before that makes visiting towns and talking to people interesting all over again.

The bottom line is that Broken Steel will absolutely make you fall in love with Fallout 3 all over again. The new missions and new items and enemies and higher level cap make the whole game feel fresh and new again. It's a good thing.

The Broken Steel missions are absolutely epic. They leave it nice and open ended too, which leaves plenty of room to keep adding on.

Broken Steel is the only DLC for Fallout I’ve purchased, and I would DEFINITELY recommend it to any other Fallout fans. The level cap along with the added high level enemies was enough for me, the extra missions and storyline expansion are just icing on this delicious $10 cake.

Way to give away the ending, moron. Some of us haven’t beaten the game yet.
A**hole.

The statute of limitations on videogame spoilers expires about 6 months after release. By then most people have played the game in question or it has been spoiled somewhere else. Not our fault you have been living under a rock.

I think that the last comment by the “xbox guide” was entirely unnecissary. I agree that the commentee could have used more subtle language than “a$$hole” but the reviewer was completely in the wrong for spoiling the ending. he (the reviewer) could have easily said, the DLC almost completely changes the original ending…”. he even stated earlier in the review “IF you reached level 20 with a character before Broken Steel and kept doing quests…” that can be interperated as “not completed the game”. He could have commented that he recognized his mistake, but no, he chose to insult the very people that the review was (and is) for! thank you very much eric qualls, you just lost a reader. maybe you should spend less time killing radscorpions and feral ghouls and spend some time in RL.

If the ended hadn’t already been spoilt for you by the media ripping it apart for it’s stupidity, then you’ve been careful enough to avoid reviews for expansion packs… Who buys an expansion pack before beating the original game anyway? yeesh.

I was wondering if broken steel makes the game neverending. Do I need to finish all side quests before beating game or are they always going to b available.

Yes, Broken Steel makes the game open ended.
