First, you CAN print off cards you find on the Internet and scan them. Check out this page on the Viva Pinata Wiki for a ton of cards you can print off. Also, you can print the cards off in black & white and they work just fine if you're like me and don't want to waste your color ink cartridge. I have also seen a few reports that you can even scan the cards by just holding the camera up to your laptop or computer screen, but I can't confirm this. Truth be told, I think it is easier to scan the cards by moving the card rather than the camera.
Actually scanning the cards - either the real deal or ones you print off - can be a bit tricky. The method that has worked best for me is making sure you are doing it in a well lit room, positioning the camera on a flat surface, turning the focus ring on the front until it is in focus, and then moving the cards around in front of it. A little box will pop up onscreen in the game that shows you what the camera is seeing. When it works, the camera will draw a little box around the onscreen card and an indicator will tell you if the card worked or if you can't use it at that time.
The key here is patience. Slowly move the card in front of the camera and make slow, smooth movements. It'll work eventually. I would also say to use the cards responsibly. It can really throw the game out of balance if you start introducing advanced pinatas before you are really ready for them. Not only that, but it takes a lot of the fun out of the game when you can just scan a chewnicorn in rather than having to earn it. Keep this in mind.

To confirm, you CAN scan them from your monitor. I have my laptop close to my Xbox and have scanned a lot of cards in. Takes a while to get used to holding the camera so it sets up in the VP guide lines, but it will work. A couple might require you to adjust the focus slightly too. I really couldn’t face printing that lot off lol.
Thanks for confirming that. I actually have my 360 and PC hooked up to the same HDTV, so I haven’t been able to test it.
um i have a strange problem with v.p tip. My dragonaches in both my gardens have gone outside the garden and wont come back in. They’re just sitting right outside the lines. First i thought they were sad, but when i highlighted them the candyosity meter was ful, then i thought my garden was too full but when i emptied it to next to nothing they still didn’t return. I’ve shut down the console,checked my harddrive for bad files saved and shut down many of times but nothing has worked, this has been going on for a week. So please if anyone has info to fix this glitch i would be greatly appreciative.

I have a bugged garden. I can load it, and it will look normal for about two seconds…then you see in the background a pinata being shot from the cannon. As soon as this happens, the garden freezes.
This is my most valuable garden. Is there a way to fix it or is it toast? I’ve rebooted, tried moving it to a memory card, moving it back, nothing works. It’s been two weeks…how do I fix my garden?
