How to Transfer Rock Band 1 Songs to Rock Band 2

By , About.com GuideAugust 21, 2008

Follow me on:

It was announced at E3 that you would be able to transfer the songs from the Rock Band 1 disc so they would be usable in Rock Band 2, but we weren't quite sure how it would work until now. Thankfully, Kotaku has all of the answers.

It seems like a fairly simple process. Rock Band 1 will get a title update to let you export the songs. Then you pay a little cash (less than $5) for a license to transfer the songs. You can now play most of the on-disc RB1 songs through RB2 after they are transferred to your hard drive.

When the transfer is complete, you don't actually have to keep the RB1 disc around. A handful of songs cannot be transferred, so how much you want to be able to play those songs is the only real reason to keep the RB1 disc. All of the RB1 DLC will work in RB2, so don't worry about the thousands of MS Points you blew on DLC already.

Another nice featured hinted at in a separate interview is that once the songs are transferred, you can manage them just like DLC. Which means if you absolutely hate a particular song on RB1, you can delete it and never have to play it again in RB2. Very nice.

As for the tracks that will ship with Rock Band 2, we have the full list right here.

i brought my hard drive to my friends house to do the update and get the RB 1 songs onto my hardrive and it worked BUT then i brought it back and put it on my 360 and now the songs arent there. thats a problem, now im going to try bringing my wholse 360 over to his house or just borrowing his RB1 but that bothers me. its supposed to be on the hard drive. and it is. but i guess it has some ties to the console to.
if i have to pay AGAIN ill get pissed. microsoft has ripped me off for microsoft points about 7 times now. ill download something it wont work. and then im the one thats screwed and they get my points.

of all the songs they have licensing issues with, one of them had to be Enter Sandman. That is one of the best songs in the game, and now i cant play it in RB2. >:{

by the way, theres no password to enter for the transfer. just buy the license and you’re set.

To the person who used their HD on another xbox to download; your songs are on your xbox and playable, however since it was downloaded on a different xbox console Serial # it will online work OFFLINE on that console it was downloaded on. Otherwise you can use those songs on your xbox console at home, only when connected to xbox live so microsoft can verify it is you. Alternatively if you can get to where you xbox has internet access, you can log onto xbox live on your xbox console, go to http://www.xbox.com and sign into your account live profile (register online if you have too) and there is a quick and easy way for it too put all the license rights to your xbox console. Then you can play all the songs all the time from that xbox offline or online. I just did it a couple days ago. It is very easy. Just remember you have to be online at your computer and on xbox live on your console. http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/licensemigration/default.htm go here, it will explain and go through everything for you… good luck!

I think its disgraceful having to PAY to transfer content that you have already paid for…

They will take any chance they get to rip you off…

Actually, it’s not Microsoft that’s ripping you off (for once). The RIAA and the song distributors are rabid about controlling distribution rights to songs. The amount you’re paying to transfer the songs was the best deal MS could get in order to have the distributors let them use the songs on another game….and not all would, which is why not all songs will transfer. The analogs that run the music industry still haven’t figured out this whole digital/internet thing.

Does this apply for the Wii, or just Xbox and PS3?

@Kawika.
Microsoft had nothing to do with the price of the transfer. If they did, wouldn’t Live and the PSN have the same price for it? Harmonix did all the work. Please don’t give MS praise, they probably would of raised the price for it…
