Penny Arcade Game Coming 5-21-08. But What If It Disappoints?

Monday May 19, 2008
This week's Xbox Live Arcade game is the first installment (of at least three!) of Penny Arcade's game titled "Penny Arcade Adventures: On The Rain-Slick Precipice Of Darkness" and it will cost you 1600 MS points ($20). It is an action adventure game starring Tycho and Gabe and other recurring PA characters and promises all of the humor that the comic (usually) provides.

But my first thought is: What happens if it sucks? The guys at Penny Arcade are extremely influential among their very devoted fan base. They are known for their analysis and commentary on gaming current events and new releases, and are generally pretty spot on with their opinions. But what happens if their game sucks? This is the game that they put their insight and experience into and this is what we can only assume is their idea of a good game. If it sucks, doesn't that hurt their credibility just a little? Will you really trust their scathing commentary on (insert random EA game here) when in the back of your mind you can't help but think "What do these guys know about good game design"? I think they already took a step towards potentially alienating their audience by pricing it at a hefty $20 for just the first episode.

What if the game is really, crazy good, though?

This was a huge gamble for Penny Arcade. Lets see if it pays off this coming Wednesday.
