31 Days of Horror - Day 30 - Condemned

Monday October 30, 2006
What Is It?: Condemned is Sega and developer Monolith's take on first-person-horror. The twist here is that instead of guns, most of the weapons you have at your disposal are blunt objects, so you have to get up close and personal to dispatch your foes.

Why Is It Scary?: Condemed is scary for a number of reasons. The story twists and turns and tells of murderers and disease and eventually your own character is accused of horrible crimes and by the end he starts to question his sanity and slowly descends into darkness. It will also scare you simply because it looks and sounds so good and realistic. The lighting effects, as they are in most good horror games, are particularly good. Also very well done is the melee combat itself. You are right there for every sickening blow when you fight an enemy and it can get pretty greusome. The game also does a great job of presenting extremely scary scenes and set pieces that are just mind blowing. One particular scene involving mannequins is one of the most memorable of recent memory, but I won't spoil it too much. This game is great and scary and a very good sign for survival horror in the next generation.
